Elementa: Science of the Anthropocene was founded by BioOne through a partnership with five research universities: Dartmouth, the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Colorado Boulder, the University of Michigan, and the University of Washington. Leaders at each of the partner institutions are deeply supportive of this new approach to returning more control over the distribution of the results of scholarship to the academic community through campus-based publishing initiatives. They have been engaged in discussions in their institutions and nationally about the need to develop new models for the sustainable dissemination of research.
The Dartmouth College Library played a unique role in this partnership, through advising on the infrastructure; developing and maintaining the publishing platform; and managing the programming and production staff needed to accomplish the editorial workflow and production.
